Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of individuals and their mental processes. This specialty has a broad focus and is not inextricably linked to the concept of mental illness. Psychology includes four major areas:

• Clinical psychology: counseling for mental and behavioral health
• Cognitive psychology: the study of the mental processes
• Behavioral psychology: understanding behavior through different types of conditioning
• Biopsychology: research on the brain, behavior, and evolution

Psychologists are doctoral level trained practitioners in the study of cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior. Their clinical practice involves observing, interpreting, and recording how individuals relate to one another and to their environments. This process is known as psychotherapy and can help to relieve symptoms through behavioral change focusing more on social, cultural, and environmental factors instead of biological ones.
