Start Your Life Care Plan with Juris Medicus

A life care plan is a report that quantifies ongoing and current costs of care for injured individuals. It is an invaluable instrument for attorneys to have in order to evaluate damages in personal injury cases.

Importance of Expert Witnesses in Preparing Comprehensive Life Care Plans

Because the plan is prepared by an expert who has the necessary credentials to testify in court, having a life care plan to reference in a personal injury case can further strengthen the case and increase the chances of a favorable outcome.

The report will project future costs of care in the following categories:
•    Cost of future medical procedures
•    Costs of household services
•    Continuing medications
•    Costs of modifying the home and the vehicle of the victim
•    Cost of transportation
•    Lost earning capacity
•    Medical equipment and supplies
•    Orthotics or prosthetics
•    Rehabilitation and physical therapy
•    Short-term or long-term care
•    Vocational therapy

What is Life Care Planning?

Life care planners evaluate individuals with catastrophic injuries or chronic health conditions to outline the projected needs created by the disability. Following assessment, they provide an integrated life care plan which is a document that provides a detail for current and future needs or services along with their associated costs.

JM’s certified life care planners have expertise in traumatic brain injury and can opine regarding earning capacity, life expectancy, levels of disability, and diminished work capacity.

The Process of Life Care Planning

1.    Initial case assessment and review of medical records: Life care planning begins with a thorough review of an individual’s hospital, medical, therapy, employment, or school and psychological documents. This may also include inpatient rehabilitation records, diagnostic reports, independent medical exams, or home health records.

2.    In-depth analysis of the individual's medical condition, prognosis, and needs: Following a thorough review of an individual’s records, the life care planner will complete a detailed evaluation of the individual. This includes interviewing family members or other appropriate stakeholders on the individual’s condition, prognosis, and needs. This may also include assessing the living situation if deemed appropriate.

3.    Collaboration with medical specialists and therapists for accurate evaluation: Upon completion of the analysis, life care planners will collaborate with medical professionals including treating doctors, therapists, mental health experts, and caregivers. This consultation can happen in person, via the phone, or via an alternative secure portal.

4.    Formulation of a comprehensive life care plan tailored to the individual's requirements: Once documents have been reviewed, the individual’s condition has been analyzed, and professionals have been consulted, life care planners begin supplemental research to support their plan for their client. When formulating a plan, a planner might reference journal articles, research medical procedures and surgeries applicable to the individual, explore community resources, and examine best practices.

5.    Presentation of the life care plan in a clear and coherent manner: Once a life care plan has been completed and approved by all necessary stakeholders, this document becomes admissible in court and can be used to provide expert testimony to educate the involved parties on future care needs and vocational possibilities.

•    Medical treatments, surgeries, and therapies
•    Medications, medical supplies, and assistive devices
•    Home modifications and accessibility improvements
•    Future medical evaluations and follow-up appointments
