Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that deals with the repair, reconstruction, or replacement of physical defects of form or function involving the skin, musculoskeletal system, cranio and maxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, and external genitalia. The foundation of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathology, and other basic sciences is fundamental to this specialty.

Plastic surgeons are specially trained to perform reconstructive plastic surgery which mainly involves surgical repair or restoration of an injured, lost, diseased, defective, or misshapen part of the body following illness or trauma. They also perform aesthetic or ‘cosmetic’ surgery which focuses on enhancing appearance and includes surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty (surgery of the eyelid), rhinoplasty (surgical correction of the nose), and breast augmentation, as well as nonsurgical procedures such as chemical peels and botulinum toxin (botox) injections.
