An epidemiologist is a specialist who works on the front line of public health. They search for the cause of a disease, identify people who are at risk, determine how to control or stop the spread of a disease, and collect evidence to prevent a future occurrence. Using statistical analysis, epidemiologists study answers to questions such as “Who is sick?”, “What are their symptoms?”, “When did they get sick?”, and “Where could they have been exposed?” The answers to these inquiries are utilized by an epidemiologist to find out how a particular health problem was introduced.
Epidemiologists have been important in understanding and implementing control measures for Legionnaire’s disease, SARS, and more recently the 2019 novel coronavirus.
