Blood Diseases

Juris Medicus has medical experts who are fellowship trained and board-certified in adult and pediatric hematology.

Blood is a specialized body fluid with four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Blood diseases and disorders can affect one or more parts of the blood and may play a role in disrupted transportation of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, an impeded ability to fight infection, and decreased or increased formation of natural blood clotting. Hematology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the blood and bone marrow. Because of the important nature of blood, the science of hematology profoundly affects the understanding of many diseases. Some blood disorders that would require the skills of a hematologist are myeloma (blood cancer), hemophilia, leukemia, sickle cell disease, Von Willebrand’s disease, thrombosis, malaria, and anemia.

Hematologists are board-certified internal medicine physicians or pediatricians that are specially trained in diseases of blood and blood components. Because blood disorders can affect almost any area of the body, hematologists usually collaborate with other medical specialists, especially internists, pathologists, radiologists, and oncologists.
