Urologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders involving the genitourinary tract, which includes the kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Conditions involving the male reproductive system are also under a urologist’s scope of practice. Common issues urologists treat are recurring kidney stones, cancers of the urinary tract or male reproductive system, erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate, male infertility, pelvic organ prolapse, and abnormalities with urination. Some urologists may subspecialize in areas of pediatric urology, male infertility, urologic reconstruction, kidney transplantation, and neuro-urology (nervous system control of genital or urinary tract organs).
