An orthopedic spine surgeon is a medical doctor that has completed a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery focusing on in-depth knowledge of the musculoskeletal system. Following residency, this surgeon will complete a year of fellowship training that is exclusively focused on the spine as well as spine surgery. Additionally, an orthopedic spinal surgeon may further their training to include spinal deformity correction which is observed in instances of scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis.

A neurosurgeon is also a medical doctor. This specialist however will participate in a residency program that focuses on the treatment of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal column, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and cerebrovascular system. Unlike an orthopedic spine doctor, a neurosurgeon’s practice does not treat musculoskeletal or joint issues.
