A SANE is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. This nursing expert performs forensic examinations, collects evidence, and educates and counsels victims of sexual assault and molestation. Forensic nursing expert testimony is used to educate juries on the characteristics of battered individuals and can inform a jury when there may be an absence of injury. There are two types of SANE professionals. A SANE-A is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for adults and adolescents. A SANE-P is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for pediatric and adolescent cases.
