Reconstructive Surgery

Juris Medicus has board-certified surgeons that specialize in reconstructive plastic surgery of ophthalmic, hand, maxillofacial, craniofacial, breast, and burn injuries. Many of our orthopedic surgeons are fellowship trained in adult reconstructive surgery and are experts in total joint replacement surgery.

Reconstructive surgery is the restoration of appearance and function following injury or disease, or the correction of congenital defects. There are two specialty areas where you can find a reconstructive surgeon: orthopedics and plastics.

Orthopedic adult reconstructive surgery is an orthopedic surgery subspecialty where surgeons are fellowship trained in all aspects of total joint replacement and joint revisions. The surgical need for reconstruction of a joint could be the result of injury, arthritis, or degeneration once conservative treatment options have been exhausted. Fellowship training in adult reconstructive surgery is completed after a 5-year orthopedic surgery residency.

Plastic surgeons are specially trained to perform reconstructive plastic surgery which restores form and function following illness or trauma. Typically, reconstructive plastic surgery is considered medically necessary and should not be confused with cosmetic surgery where the primary focus is on the augmentation of normal anatomy to make it more visually appealing. Cosmetic surgery is an essential component of plastic surgery as the surgeon uses cosmetic surgical principles to both improve overall appearance and to optimize the outcome of reconstructive procedures.
