Nephrology

Juris Medicus’ nephrologists are fellowship trained in renal diseases and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Nephrology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney. The kidneys’ critical functions are to cleanse blood, maintain a stable balance of salt and minerals, and help regulate blood pressure. This is done through the filtering and removal of waste products and excess fluid through the urine. Many diseases affecting the kidney are systemic disorders not limited to the organ itself and may require special treatment.

A nephrologist is a medical doctor who is trained in kidney care and treating diseases of the kidneys. They commonly treat chronic kidney disease (CKD), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), acute renal failure, kidney stones, and high blood pressure and are educated on all aspects of kidney transplantation and dialysis. While nephrologists must maintain expertise in primary kidney disorders, they must also have a thorough understanding in the management of the systemic consequences of kidney dysfunction.
