Maxillofacial Surgery

Juris Medicus has both physicians and dentists who are certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat conditions of the head, neck, mouth, jaw, and face. While an oral surgeon’s care is limited to the mouth, a maxillofacial surgeon can treat more complex conditions such as cleft lips and pallets, jaw fractures, facial trauma, cancers of the head and neck, mouth and jaw tumors or cysts, bite abnormalities, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. These specialists are trained in anesthesia and pain control. They can place dental implants and perform wisdom tooth extractions, reconstructive surgeries, and cosmetic surgeries such as rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and facial liposuction.

After the completion of dental school and a surgical residency, maxillofacial surgeons in the United States take exams to become certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Fellowships may be pursued in one of four subspecialties: head and neck cancer, cosmetic facial surgery, craniofacial surgery and pediatric maxillofacial surgery, and cranio-maxillofacial trauma.
