Hepatology

Juris Medicus has a board-certified gastroenterologist who is fellowship trained in liver diseases and Hepatitis C research. He is also a member of the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology.

Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as management of their disorder(s). This can include, but is not limited to, the study of acute and chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, genetic and metabolic liver disease, liver cancer, liver transplantation, drug metabolism, and immunology as it pertains to the liver.

A hepatologist is a gastroenterologist who is trained to specifically treat disorders of the liver, as well as its associated organs, the pancreas and gallbladder. Some procedures performed by hepatologists include biopsies, ultrasounds, fibroscans, endoscopies, and specialty scans to visualize the biliary tract and bile production.

Transplant hepatology represents advanced training in gastroenterology and focuses on the management of advanced liver disease. Transplant hepatologists also manage patients both before and after transplantation, and therefore have expertise in managing issues such as immunosuppression and transplant-associated infectious diseases.
