A gastroenterologist is a specialist who is trained in diagnosing and treating disease of the digestive system. In addition to extensive internal medicine training, a gastroenterologist also receives dedicated training in endoscopy to include upper endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. Endoscopy is a procedure that involves the use of narrow flexible tubes with a built-in video camera that can be inserted into the intestinal tract. This helps the doctor visualize the inside of the tract and effectively diagnose intestinal disorders.
