The colon and rectum are part of the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The colon is the large intestine or large bowel. The rectum is the passageway that connects the colon to the anus. Colorectal surgery treats benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) conditions affecting the colon, rectum, and anus. These conditions may include colorectal cancer, colonic polyps, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Colorectal surgeons are physicians that have completed advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of colon and rectal problems, making them experts in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of colorectal disorders. In addition to full training in general surgery, they have completed an intensive fellowship in colon and rectal surgery.
