Cardiovascular disease is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels throughout the body. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and around the world. There are many types of cardiovascular disease. Four of the main types are:
• Coronary heart disease
• Stroke and TIA (“mini stroke”)
• Peripheral arterial disease
• Aortic disease
Cardiologists are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases or conditions of the heart and blood vessels—the cardiovascular system. Cardiology is an incredibly complex field, and while all cardiologists are experts in understanding the heart and blood vessels, they can also narrow their field of expertise to over a dozen specialty areas.
