Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that specializes in the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. A physician specializing in bariatrics is called a bariatrician. They oversee and manage all non-surgical aspects of patient care regarding obesity and weight loss. When medical management fails to produce the desired outcome, a referral to a bariatric surgeon may follow.
Bariatric surgery is the collective term for a variety of procedures performed on people who are morbidly obese to help them lose weight. Surgeries can include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and duodenal switch. These procedures work by changing the anatomy, or position of the stomach and small intestines to limit food intake, reduce nutrient absorption, or a combination of the two. Bariatric surgery is done to help patients who are severely overweight when diet and exercise have not worked. Additionally, it is performed to lower the risk of severe, life-threatening health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep apnea and Type 2 diabetes.
